Ongoing Projects:
Microfinance, Credit Regulation, Lender and Borrower Behaviour
Monetary Policy and Legacy Loan Exposure in Non-Bank Credit Markets. Examines how lenders' historical exposure to borrower default shapes subsequent lending, pricing, maturity decisions, write-offs and agent retention/exit, identifying persistent effects of legacy credit risk on lending behaviour.
Organising Enforcement: Gender, Delegation, and Repayment Compliance. Investigates whether gender matching between lending loan agents and borrowers affects default risk in doorstep high-cost microfinance, examining how gender pairing interacts with delegated monitoring and borrower repayment behaviour.
The Paradox of Financial Inclusion Policy. Evaluates how the UK's Financial Conduct Authority's cap on interest rates and fees altered lender pricing, loan size, maturity, credit supply, default outcomes and the composition of short-term lending.
Regulatory Shocks and Local Financial Strain: Demand-Side Evidence from UK High-cost Microlending. Examines behavioural responses of short-term credit borrowers following the introduction of the Financial Conduct Authority's cap, focusing on changes in borrowing patterns, repayment behaviour and borrower composition.
Energy, Sustainability and Inequality
Structural Oil Shocks and Household Debt Service Burdens. Uses panel local projections for 33 advanced and emerging economies to identify how structurally distinct oil shocks affect household debt-service burdens and macro-financial vulnerability. The paper highlights heterogeneous transmission through disposable income, domestic energy inflation, energy dependence and household savings.
Energy Price Shocks and Inequality: The Role of Structural Vulnerability and Policy Intervention. Uses threshold panel regression and quantile regression for panel data across 42 advanced, emerging and developing economies to examine how retail energy-price shocks affect inequality conditional on energy import dependence, fossil-fuel subsidies, inflation and income levels.
Predicting Sustainable Asset Returns under Energy and Sustainability-Policy Uncertainty. Examines the joint predictive role of energy-related uncertainty and sustainability-policy uncertainty for clean-energy equities, ESG indices, green bonds and the clean-versus-fossil energy return spread, with particular attention to transition-risk premia and asymmetric responses to uncertainty.
Unravelling the Spatial Risk Factors of Green Growth in the EU. Examines the spatial determinants and spillover effects of green economic growth across the European Union and the United Kingdom using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach and alternative spatial connectivity matrices based on bilateral trade, geographical proximity and international collaboration in environmental technologies. The study identifies economic interdependencies and shared technological knowledge as stronger drivers of spatial green-growth dynamics than geographical proximity.
Bias and Fairness in Higher Education Assessment
Judgement and Discretion in Academic Marking. Examines how fairness and consistency are understood and enacted in higher education assessment using survey data from academics across two UK business schools. Combining quantitative analysis with sentiment analysis, topic modelling and thematic coding, the study identifies sources of bias and a persistent gap between formal assessment policies and their practical implementation, highlighting the importance of consistent calibration, shared standards and accountability in academic marking.
Organising Professional Judgement in Higher Education Assessment: Formation, Availability and Coordination. Examines how professional judgement is organised across the higher education assessment process using a mixed-methods survey of academics across two UK business schools. The study develops an organisational process account linking judgement formation, judgement availability, coordination and coordination outcomes, highlighting the roles of judgement traceability, reason-giving and reference-
